Project Brief
This design & build project honors the memory
of Sue Mango, a beloved member of the Lied Center of Kansas.
Sue, who was always described as an impactful community member, shared a keen interest in gardening and reading.
Our design intentions honor her memory with a garden that accentuates organic whimsical forms, which render a sense of place for the community,
while also designed to deliver moments of meaningful personal introspection in a space that continuously blooms and ages
next to the beloved arts center: The curved CLT roof sunshade attached to a rammed
earth wall are latent elements that bloom with the garden, while the monolithic 7-foot-tall gabion wall which accompany the five
weathering steel planters hosting over 900 Kansas native plants
and grasses age to honor the legacy Sue left to the city of Lawrence.
This was a team project led by Professor Chad Kraus, in
collaboration with APEX Engineers, SMARTLAM, and others.
My main responsibility was overseeing the technical design
side of the project, which involved constant challenges,
mark-ups, and the philosophy that design is never finished
until completion. I had the opportunity to strengthen my
technical design skills by producing more than 15 detailed
drawings while
overseeing the development of the studio’s CD set
,
alongside my peer, Sabrina Chappell.
